The Economist에서 Wells Fargo를 다룬 기사에서 나온 내용.

As big banks are barred by regulatros from acquiring smaller ones, growth has been organic. JPMorgan expanded its branch network, gaining market share in places that Wells has traditionally dominated, such as Denver in colorado. 

위 기사에서 organic은 아래 뜻으로 쓰였다.

denoting a relation between elements of something such that they fit together harmoniously as necessary parts of a whole.

Organic growth 정의도 있다.

Organic growth is the growth rate a company can achieve by increasing output and enhancing sales internally. This does not include profits or growth attributable to takeovers, acquisitions or mergers.

organic 어원이 organ에서 왔으니, organic growth가 외부가 아닌 내부에서 일어난 성장을 뜻한다는 말이 금방 이해가 된다. 그런데 이 용어를 흔히 '유기적 성장'이라고 번역하는 듯하다. 이렇게 번역하면 곧바로 알아들을 사람이 얼마나 될까?  '자생적 성장'이란 번역도 보인다. 두 번째 번역이 더 좋겠다. 

The Good Place S3 E6에서 나온 표현

Eleanor 어머니가 Eleanor를 다시 만나서, 정말 착한 사람이 되었구나, 라고 얘기하면서 건넨 말.

So, props to whoever helped you. 누군지 모르지만 너를 착하게 만든 사람 대단하네.

Prop이 respect or credit을 뜻하는 informal expression으로 쓰인다.

That was the last we saw of her. 

그 때가 그녀를 본 마지막이었다. 

That was가 없다면, we saw the last of her 이다. 그런데 that was와 결합하면서 the last가 앞으로 튀어 나왔다. 알고 있는 문법 지식으로 보면, That was when we saw the last of her라는 생각이 든다. 그런데 when이 시점을 나타내고 the last도 시점을 나타내니까, when을 생략하고 이렇게 쓴다고 추측해본다.

Netflix에서 Gardening을 다룬 영국 영상에서 나온 표현이다.

Nothing says sunshine more than a palm tree and Jan is determined to have one.

야자나무만큼 햇빛이 있어야 잘 자라는 식물이 없기에 잰은 야자나무 한그루를 꼭 심어야겠다는 생각이다.

그런데 영상 자막에는 아래처럼 번역되었다.

'하지만 그 어떤 것도 야자수만큼은 못해서 잰은 결국 하나를 들이기로 결정합니다. '

Nothing says A Like B라는 틀 지워진 말씨가 있다. 'A를 보여주는 데 (지지하는 데) B만한 것이 없다.'로 뜻 풀이된다. Quora.com에 보면 아래 보기글이 있다. 

“Nothing says ‘Thank you’ like ice cream.”

(“There is no better way to thank someone for something than to serve them an ice-cream treat.”)

“Nothing says ‘Happy birthday, America!’ like a good country song.”

(“Nothing more embodies a United States Independence Day celebration than a good country-and-western song.”)

“Nothing says ‘loving’ like something from the oven.”

(“There is no better way to show someone you care for them than to cook/bake something for them to eat.”)

if something is any indication. 한영 번역할 때 알아두면 좋을 표현이다. 

'~를 보면 알겠지만'을 영어로 옮기려고 하면 'as you can see~'정도 밖에 생각이 나지 않을 듯하다. 이럴 때 이 표현을 쓰면 아주 깔끔하겠다. 

If these long lines are any indication, getting your hand on that product right away will be difficult. 

길게 늘어선 줄을 보면 알겠지만, 그 제품을 사기 어려울 거야. 

찾아보니, 이런 경구도 있다. if history is any indication이 가장 흔하게 쓰이는 듯하다.

손 좀 담구고 있어라. (x)    손 좀 담그고 있어라. (o)

동사 원형이 잠그다/담그다 이기 때문에, '잠궈야', '담구고'라고 쓰면 틀리다.

어떤 전치사를 써야 하는지 헷갈릴 때가 많다. 그 가운데 하나가 increase (decrease) 다음에 of를 써야 할지 in을 써야할지 잘 모를 때다. Cambridge 사전은 아래처럼 쓰임새를 갈라 놓았다. 

(i) of a certain amount

(ii) of something that has grown larger

(iii) in something used a means of measurement, e.g. size, temperature, etc.

(iv) in something being measured statistically

1. of a certain amount

이 쓰임새는 다른 갈래 쓰임새에 견주어 헷갈리지 않는다. 

an increase of 3 percent나 an increase of 300 million more immigrants 처럼 뒤에 퍼센티지나 숫자가 나올 때 쓸 수 있다. 

2. of something that has grown larger

이 쓰임새는 여전히 헷갈린다. COCA에서 나온 실제 쓰임새는 다음과 같다.

an increase of female arrests / an increase of cases

an increase in outputs / an increase in buybacks 

위와 같은 쓰임새에서 of와 in이 달라지는 까닭을 설명할 수 있는가? 모두 복수로 쓰는 가산 명사인데, 왜 어떤 때는 of를 쓰고 어떤 때는 in을 쓰는가? 

3. in something used a means of measurement, e.g. size, temperature, etc.

이 쓰임새도 헷갈린다. COCA에서 나온 실제 쓰임새는 다음과 같다.

an increase of air pollution / an increase of immigration

an increase in volatility (price, daily trading volume)

4. in something being measured statistically

이 사례는 흔하지 않고 of를 쓸지 in을 쓸지 헷갈릴 보기는 찾지 못했다.

1. Up the ante를 어떻게 번역하면 좋을까? 상황마다 너무 달라서 번역하기가 어렵다. 

South Korea on Monday decided to remove Japan from its trusted trading partners, upping the ante in the trade haggling sparked by the neighboring country's export restrictions against Seoul.

일본이 한국에 단행한 수출 규제로 불거진 무역 분쟁에서 한국은 맞불을 놓으며 일본을 무역 우대 국가에서 제외하기로 월요일에 결정하였다. 

2. Cambridge 사전에 나온 정의와 보기글은 다음과 같다.

Up the ante: to increase your risks or demands in order to get a greater advantage:

The governor upped the ante in her war of words with the mayor, by calling him "dangerous" for the city. 

XX 주지사는 XX 시장을 시에서 '위험한 인물'이라고 부르면서, 시장과 벌이는 설전을 더 뜨겁게 만들었다.
