The Laws of Human Nature, by Robert Greene 을 뒤적이다가 잠깐 무슨 뜻이지 하고 고민했던 문장이다. 155쪽에 있다.

People were now feeling the fever and were pouring some of their money into these new joint-stock companies. Every ￡1 of cash that went into these was one ￡1 less that people had to spend on the South Sea Company, and that was a growing problem, since there was only so much cash in England, and there were limits to how far he could go by offering credit. 

사람들이 새로운 joint-stock companies에 투자하면 그만큼 South Sea Company에 덜 투자한다는 뜻이다. 그런데 우리말에서 영어로 옮기라고 하면, 저렇게 영어 문장을 만들 수 있다고 절대 생각해 낼 수 없을 듯하다.

그런데 뉴턴이 South Sea Company에 투자했다가 쫄딱 망했다고는 알았지만, 읽다 보니 금액이 나온다. ￡20,000다. 그래서 요즘 돈으로 환산하면 얼마인가 하고 찾아보니 2002~2003년 기준으로 $3million 이란다!

What I find interesting is that .....처럼 find something interesting 같은 표현은 익숙하다. 그런데 문어체로는 interesting 대신에 of interest를 쓸 수 있을 것이다. 

그런데 of interest가 더 유용할 때는 find something interesting에서 something이 길게 나올 때다. 예를 들어서 I find his 2014 two-part article in Korean, English Language Contracts: Reducing the Clutter and Confusion interesting처럼 쓴다면 좀 거시기하다. 그래서 이 블로거는 아래처럼 썼다.

그런데 위 문장에서 of interest를 안 쓰고 interesting을 쓰려면 어떻게 할 수 있을까? 

Koreans might find it interesting to read my 2014 two-part article in Korean, English Language Contracts: Reducing the Clutter and Confusion. 라고 쓸 수 있겠다. 

지정생존자 S2E4를 보다가 처음 알게된 표현이다. Gild the lily...

드라마에서는 아이가 거짓말 한다는 뜻을 완곡하게 얘기하면서 이 표현을 썼는데, 정의를 보면 다음과 같다.

to improve or decorate something that is already perfect and therefore spoil it:

그러니까 우리말로는 '사족을 달다'쯤 된다.

어원을 찾아보니 셰익스피어가 이 말을 만들진 않았지만 자신의 시에서 이런 표현을 썼다고 한다. King John에 보면 다음과 같은 구절이 있다고 한다. 

SALISBURY: 
Therefore, to be possess'd with double pomp, 
To guard a title that was rich before, 
To gild refined gold, to paint the lily, 
To throw a perfume on the violet, 
To smooth the ice, or add another hue 
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light 
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish, 
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess.

그리고 'gild the lily'란 표현은 1895년에 처음 쓰였다고 한다.

The first citation I can find for 'gild the lily' comes from the USA, in the Newark Daily Advocate, 1895, in what appears to be a half-remembered version of Shakespeare:

"One may gild the lily and paint the rose, but to convey by words only an adequate idea of the hats and bonnets now exhibited absolutely passes human ability."

Mitchell이 자신이 씩씩하지 못해서 사내 아이를 둘째로 입양하지 못하겠다고 Cam에게 얘기하자 Cam이 Mitchell에게 한 말. 

I think you are more masculine than you give yourself credit for.

내가 보기엔 네가 생각하는 것 보다 훨씬 더 남자다워.  

More ~ than you give yourself credit for가 흔히 사용되는 틀이다. 

You are more resilient than you give yourself credit for. 

You are doing better than you give yourself credit for. 

하마터면 일 낼 뻔했지 뭐냐.  (o)

하마트면 일 낼 뻔 했지 뭐냐. (x)

'뻔하다'는 보조형용사로 한 낱말.  (보기) 차에 치일 뻔했다. 떨어질 뻔했다.

'트면'이 들어간 우리말은 없으며, '-터면'도 '하마터면'밖에 없음.

'맞는다면'이 맞을까? '맞다면'이 맞을까? 헷갈린다. 그래서 찾아 봤다.

1. 'ㄹ'을 제외한 받침 있는 동사 어간 뒤에 현재 사건/사실을 서술하는 뜻을 나타낼 때 '-는다'라고 쓴다. 

2. '-는다면'은 '-는다고 하면'이란 뜻이다.

3. '맞다', '틀리다'는 동사라서 다음과 같이 쓴다.  

      네 말이 맞는다면 내 손에 장을 지진다. (o)      네 말이 맞다면 내 손에 장을 지진다. (x)

      내가 틀린다면 거기에 가겠다. (o)                 내가 틀리다면 거기에 가겠다. (x)

4.  '옳다'는 형용사라서 다음과 같이 쓴다.

     네 말이 옳다면 내 손에 장을 지진다. (o)

'걷잡다'는 거두어 잡든다는 뜻이다.

'겉잡다'는 겉으로 대강 짐작하여 헤아리는 걸 말한다.

아무리 겉잡아도 일주일은 넘게 길릴 일을 하루 이틀 만에 해치우려다가 결국 걷잡을 수 없는 사태를 초래하고 말았다. 

'겉잡아도'는 'roughly speaking'이라고 할 수 있고, '걷잡을 수 없는'은 uncontrollable이다.

Steven Pinker가 쓴 책 The better angels of our nature에 나온 글귀.

Genocides don't exactly fall into a power-law distribution, if for no other reason than that the small massacres that would go into the tall spine tend not be counted as "genocides."  

if for no other reason than 뜻은 다른 이유가 없더라도 than 다음에 이어지는 이유만으로도 앞에 사실을 설명할 수 있다는 뜻이다.  

if for no other reason than simply means that what you're talking about is alone or already a good enough reason to do something.
