Remiss를 careless, negligent라는 낱말 뜻으로만 알면 이 문장을 어떻게 번역해야 할지 난감하다. 

그런데 I would be remiss if....는 부드럽게 말하는 예의 바른 표현이다.

아프리카에 천연자원과 기회가 아주 많다는 얘기를 빼 놓으면 안 되겠네요. (같은 얘기를 영작하라고 하면 아마 I should mention that .....으로 밖에 못할 듯하다.)

회의 첫 머리에 많이 듣는 말이다. 골프경기에서 공을 놓는 행위라는 원래 뜻은 알고 있었지만, 실제로 이야기를 주고 받을 때 어떻게, 언제 써야 하는지는 잘 와닿지 않았다. 그래서 여러 보기를 적어 본다.

Challenge를 동사로 쓰면서 말하기 쉽지 않다. 우리 말과 일대일로 번역하기 어려운 구조다. 예문을 많이 보면서 익숙해져야 한다. challenge를 '도전'이란 말로 틀에 박히게 번역하면 영 어색하다. 

I pray you would challenge us to trust you.  기독교인이 기도하면서 이렇게 얘기한다. "우리를 담금질해서 당신을 믿게 해 주시길 기도합니다."

I want to challenge us to think about one way that we, as a community, can help serve the nation now.    "쉽지 않겠지만 우리가 공동체로서 이 나라를 위해 어떻게 도울 수 있을지 생각해 보았으면 합니다."   

She can challenge us to deal with some of the big issues that are facing us. "그녀는 우리 앞에 놓인 큰 문제들을 피하지 않고 우리가 당당히 맞닥뜨려 해결해 나가라고 얘기하기도 합니다."  

A is a source of B. 해석하면 어려운 문장은 아니지만, 번역할 때 'A는 B의 원천이다'라고만 하면 짜증날 것 같다. 그리고 이 문장으로 영작을 하기도 힘들다.  A 때문에 B가 된다는 얘기인데, 이런 표현이 떠오를 수 있을까?

Googling해서 찾은 글을 보면서 맥락과 더불어 기억하면 좋겠다.

지난 10월에 미국은행 규제를 완화하는 정책이 발표되었다는 기사에서 나온 '정리의향서'란 표현. 미국 은행들이 매년 작성했었는데 이제 4년에 한 번만 작성하도록 완화했다고 한다. 

찾아보니 정리의향서란 living wills라고 한다. 다른 말로 '사전 유언장'이다. 회사가 망하면 어떻게 하겠다는 계획을 담은 문서를 말한다. 개인들도 살아 있을 때 내가 죽으면 어떻게 하라고 써 놓은 유언장을 만들 수 있다. 그런데 유언장은 다 살아 있을 때 만들잖아. 그래서 wills와 living wills가 어떻게 다른지 찾아보니 이렇게 구별된다. 

Difference Between a Will and a Living Will. A will, also known as a last will, distributes a person's property after his death. A living will, on the other hand, explains what kind of medical care that person wants when he is still alive but unable to explain his wishes.

타격을 주다라고 할 때 strike a blow만 쓰지 말고 deal a blow란 표현도 써보자.  

The global financial crisis in 2008 dealt a heavy blow to our markets and economy.

위험이 커지거나 심각해진다고 할 때 쓰면 좋겠다.

영작하라고 하면 Risks are escalating 아니면 Risks are becoming greater 밖에 생각 안 날 때 Risks are intensifying하면 좋겠다.
