선거운동할 때는 시처럼 아름다운 미래를 얘기하지만, 당선되어 정권을 잡고 나면 산문처럼 현실에 바탕을 두어 운영한다는 뜻이다. 미국 뉴욕 시장 Cuomo가 1985년에 얘기하였고, 정치하는 사람들이 자주 인용하는 말인 듯하다. 

Former New York Governor, Mario Cuomo, is credited with the phrase ‘campaign in poetry, govern in prose,’ which translates into painting a rosy picture of what one would do when voted into office as if by merely saying it, means it will happen without raising a finger.

이와 비슷하게 결혼을 poetry와 prose에 빗댄 인용문도 있다. 

Marriage - a book of which the first chapter is written in poetry and the remaining chapters in prose.

유튜브 라이브 아카데미 채널에서 알게된 표현. 

as if things weren't bad enough, ~      안그래도 안 좋은데, ~

As if things weren't bad enough with this Corona thing, we're faced with very disturbing news about a very problematic young man whose crime steps on some very sensitive issues that run really deep with people. 

그런데 찾아보니,

1. as를 빼고 if things weren't bad enough나 if that weren't bad enough 표현으로도 쓰인다.

2. bad를 빼고 if that weren't enough로도 쓰인다.  그런데 이렇게 쓰면 꼭 안 좋은 뜻으로만 쓰이진 않는다. 

발표자가 두명이다. 청중이 질문을 한다. 발표자 1이 대답을 그냥저냥 한다. 그러자 발표자 2가 저렇게 얘기한다. 

I will come at it. 그 질문에 제가 한번 답해 보죠.  I'll have a go at it.과 비슷한 뜻이 되겠다. 

speak to 다음에 사람이 아닌 다른 것이 올 때는 우리 말과 어법이 다르기 때문에 잘 와 닿지 않는다.  그래서 여러 보기글을 보면서 익혀야 한다. 

~을 설명한다는 뜻으로 쓰인다. 영작하면 explain 밖에 생각 안 날 때 쓸 수 있다. 

1. There is a hypothesis that capitalism is based on a masculine model. Could you speak to that? 

2 These are not mere differences of opinion. As in the blitz, there are differences in behaviour, which seem to speak, ultimately, to differences in character.

3. I'm more addressing the issue and then the issue will speak to the audience. 

4. I want to make images that speak to that relationship. 

5. That was the issue I was trying to speak to. 

Decidedly elite participants라는 문구를 보면서 decidedly 뜻이 뭔지 헷갈림. 

Decidedly는 clearly, obviously와 거의 같은 뜻으로 쓸 수 있겠다. clearly나 obviously는 너무 식상하니까 decidedly를 기회되면 한 번 써봐야 겠다. 

I'm most decidedly not an expert in that field. 

The U.S. decided to take a decidedly different course from any time in the last 66 years.  

His subsequent painting looked decidedly old-fashioned. 

Youtube comedy channel인 'Between ferns'에서 off-putting으로 말장난을 한다.

A: It was off-putting. 

B: You should be off-pudding. You shouldn't eat pudding. 

Host인 A가 불쾌하다(off-putting)고 얘기하니까 guests인 B가 off-pudding이라고 얘기한다 하지만 A는 off-putting으로 알아들으니 B가 off-pudding이라고 말하고자 You shouldn't eat pudding이라고 한다.

Off-putting은 뭔가 좀 마음에 들지 않거나 적절하지 않은 물건, 사람, 상황 등을 말할 때 쓸 수 있다 

We need to be careful that the scale is communicated in a way which is off-putting to people. 

Some women found the competitive style of the discussions off-putting.

유튜브 라이브 아카데미 채널을 보다가 알게 된 표현.  

The worst is (likely) behind us.  가장 나쁜 상황은 벗어난 듯하다.

1. likely는 잘 안 넣는 듯하다. 그냥 I think the worst is behind us. 이런 짜임으로 자주 쓰는 듯하다.  

2. behind us 말고 다른 명사를 넣을 수 있나? 그렇다.

The worst is behind you, him, them, Facebook. 다 넣어서 쓰인다. 

3. behind 다음에 다른 말은 어떻게 넣나? 

The worst is behind us for housing. For commercial real estate, there is still a big dark cloud.

4. 반대 뜻은 많이 쓰이나?

Coca에서 검색하면 I fear the worst is ahead. 라는 보기글 하나만 나온다.   

Something being what it is, ...  "Something이 원래 그렇듯이"로 번역하면 되겠다. 

Politics being what it is, I know that some people try to score political points off our decision.

Human nature being what it is, people must be made to pay for something to appreciate it.

The market being what it is, the price variance is huge. 

With my personality being what it is, I had to learn everything and anything that I could.
