FASB가 6월에 예정되었던 회의에 오지 못한다는 이메일.

Our optimism has been replaced with the realilty라는 표현이 새롭다.

그리고 COVID-19이 아니라 COVID라고만 쓴 것도 눈에 띈다.

이런 낱말도 있네. Wherewithal은 money 와 비슷한 뜻이다.

더 정확히 얘기하면, The money necessary for a particular purpose

우리 말로 '여력'이라고 하면 어울릴 때가 많은 듯하다.

I'd like to buy a bigger house, but I don't have the wherewithal. (* 나보고 영작하라면 I don't have enough money 밖에 생각이 안 났겠지)

구글에서 얼마나 자주 사용되는지 찾아보니 아직도 많이 사용된다. 그런데 어떻게 오늘에야 처음 알게 되었네!

영한사전을 보면 mill around(or about)를 '서성이다', '배회하다'라고 뜻풀이 해놓았다. 그런데 정작 mill around를 이렇게 옮기며 어색할 때가 많다.

Quite a few people were milling around, but nothing was happening.

Dozens of people milled around Charing Cross Road and Denmark Street. 

꽤 많은 사람들이 북적대고 있었지만 아무 일도 벌어지지 않고 있었다. 

여남은 이들이 채링 크로스 길과 덴마크 거리에서 북적였다. 

mill around는 아래 낱말들과 더 잘 맞는다. 

북적대다, 북적이다, 와글와글, 북적북적, 수선스럽게, 옹기종기, 옹기옹기

옹기종기는 아래 보기글처럼 강사가 청중들에게 얘기할 때 쓸 수 있겠다.

발표가 끝나고 다들 앞으로 오셔서 옹기종기 모이시면, 자세자세 보여드리겠습니다.

보내는 글 마지막에  흔히 쓰는 말짜임이다.

We remain at your disposal (for any further inquiries). 

흔히 Feel free to contact us (for any further inquiries) 를 쓰는데, 요렇게 얘기하면 더 formal 한 듯하다.    

We remain at your service, We remain available이라고도 쓰는 듯하다. 

사전을 보면 Come across 에 세 가지 뜻이 있다.

1. (우연히) 마주치다. I've never come across anyone like him.

2. (생각, 의견, 감정)이 전달되다. Your point really came across at the meeting. 

3. (사람)이 ~처럼 보이다. He came across as a bit of bore in the interview.

세 뜻이 모두 다르다고 말할 수도 없을 듯하다. 상황, 문맥에 따라 다른 뜻을 지니기에 이렇게 나눠 놓았을 뿐이지 come across라고 말할 때 머리속에 그려지는 그림은 같으니까. A come B는 A와 B가 가까와 지는 그림이다. 그리고 across가 있으니까 A와 B가 원래 멀리 떨어져 있는데 come을 해서 가까워지는 그림이다. 그런데 뒤집어 얘기하면, 둘은 멀리 떨어져 있었기 때문에 come across하긴 했지만 둘이 딱 가까워 졌다고 할 수는 없다. 2번에서 A인 point가 come across해서 B에게 가더라도  B가 A를 온전히 A를 다 받아들였다고 할 수는 없다. 하지만 A가 어떤 모습인지 명확히 알았다는 수준이라고 할 수 있다. 

아래 문장을 보면서 무슨 뜻인지 한 번에 잘 와닿지 않았다.

우리가 하는 말이나 행동이 우리가 의도한 바대로 다른 사람에게 잘 전달되지 않기 때문에, 어떻게 잘 전달될 수 있게 할 수 있는지 찾으려고 애쓴다는 얘기다. 영작을 하라면 아마 이렇게 쓰지 않았을까?

come across 같은 phrasal verb를 영작할 때 쓰기 참 어렵다. 원어민은 오히려 쉽게 쓸 텐데...

Sear라는 낱말은 고기 구울 때만 쓰는 줄 알았지 이렇게 빗대어 쓰는 줄 처음 알았네.

마음, 기억에 아픈 상처를 남긴 일을 얘기하면서 많이 쓴다.

It remains seared into the memory of a future world.  (오바마 대통령이 전사자 추모 연설 같은데서 한 말) 

후세 사람들 기억에 아픈 상처로 남아 있습니다.

The bomb forever seared the word "nuclear" into our minds as a force that's destructive and deadly. (인사이드 빌게이츠 3부)

원자폭탄이 터진 뒤 '핵'이라는 낱말은 우리 마음속에 영원히 지울 수 없는 상처가 되어 모든 것을 무너뜨리는 무시무시한 힘으로 기억되고 있습니다. 

(Netflix 자막: 이 폭탄은 우리 마음에 '핵'이라는 단어를 파괴적이고 치명적이라는 힘이라고 평생 낙인시켰습니다.  * "폭탄이 ~을 낙인시켰습니다." ->'낙인시키다'란 말이 어색함. '평생'도 어색함.) 

The events of 9/11 will be forever seared into the memories of all Americans who bore witness to the single greatest tragedy to befall our homeland in recent history.     

The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory.   

They are the first to have their pride seared away by atomic fire.  (이건 상처를 남겼다는 뜻도 담으면서 atomic bomb 이라는 표현과 어울리게 태워서 없어졌다는 뜻도 나타내려고 쓴 듯하다.)                               

It is what it is. 우리말로 하면 '좋든 싫든 받아들여야 하는 것이죠.'

A conversation between mother and daughter.

• Mother: Did you work things out with Jake?

• Daughter: No, he wasn’t willing to work things out.

A conversation between two co-workers.

• Co-worker 1: I don’t agree with these new policies that they are enforcing.

• Co-worker 2: I don’t particularly agree with them either but what choice do we have?

• Co-worker 1: We don’t have a choice. It is what it is I suppose.

그런데 아래 연결주소에 있는 글을 보면 이 표현을 두 가지 뜻으로 해석할 수 있다는 측면을 말한다. 이 표현을 말하는 사람이 해당 상황을 긍정적으로 받아들이는지(즉 여러 가능성이 있을 수 있다고 인정) 아니면 부정적으로 받아들이는지(즉 싫지만 어쩔 수 없이 인정) 두 가지 뜻이 있다고 한다. It is what it is!

At the moment, right now와 같은 뜻이다. 이런 표현들만 써서 식상하다면 as we speak 같은 말도 쓰면 좋겠다~
