I am going to have to~  예의바른 표현으로 쓸 수 있는 줄 몰랐다.

가장 흔히 쓰는 말로는 "I am going to have to say no."  우리말로 옮기면 "그건 아닌 듯합니다.", "그렇게 하긴 싫다고 해야 겠네요." 등등으로 번역해야 하겠다.  

뒤에 오는 말이 듣는 사람에게 거북할 수 있는 내용일 때 간접적으로 내용을 전달하고자 그냥 have to ~ 라고 해도 되지만 going to 를 앞에 군더더기처럼 붙여서 쓴다.

I am going to have to ask you to step outside.  

I am going to have to take adverse action. 

Ted의 'The past, present and future of nicotine addiction' 영상에서 나온 표현이다.

Tobacco 판매가 nicotine 파는 행위일 뿐이라고 밝힌 1963년도 보고서를 언급하면서 하는 얘기다.

"Nicotine is addictive. We are, then, in the business of selling nicotine. "

"It's a remarkable statement, as much for what it doesn't say as for what it does say. He didn't say they were in the cigarette business. He said they were in the business of selling nicotine."

as much .... as.... 틀로 쓸 때 이렇게 쓰려는 생각을 잘 못할 듯하다. 

It matters as much for them as for anyone else. 

So my question is, and this is maybe as much for you, Shelly, as for the panelists, is...

 Iconic brands are known as much for what they make us feel as for what they do. 

Take someone aside:

To take someone away from a group in order to speak privately

'따로 불러내다'로 번역하면 될까? 

The boss took me aside and told me my performance had not been satisfactory lately.

I took the student aside to tell him the terrible news.

I made an investment in excess of $100. 는 영작할 때 이렇게 쓸 수 있을 것 같다. 

그러나, I paid in excess of $100. 라는 문장은 보면 해석은 되겠지만 영작할 때 이렇 쓸 생각은 들지 않을 것이다. 그저 I paid more than $100.라고 하겠지. 그래서 이런 틀로 쓰인 문장을 익혀 두어야 하겠다. 

It can cost in excess of 60,000 to 80,000 dollars a year.

Some squids could grow in excess of 50 feet long. 

You need to earn in excess of 50 million dollars a year. 

Netflix에서 인사이드 빌 게이츠 part 2를 보는 데 이런 표현이 나온다.

So, it crossed your mind to sandbag.

빌 게이츠가 사립학교 가기 싫어서 일부러 시험에서 떨어질까 라는 생각을 했다고 하자 interviewer가 이렇게 물어 보았다.

sandbag 뜻을 찾아보니 아래와 같은 뜻이 있다.

to conceal or misrepresent one's true position, potential, or intent especially in order to gain an advantage over.

to deliberately underperform.

선거운동할 때는 시처럼 아름다운 미래를 얘기하지만, 당선되어 정권을 잡고 나면 산문처럼 현실에 바탕을 두어 운영한다는 뜻이다. 미국 뉴욕 시장 Cuomo가 1985년에 얘기하였고, 정치하는 사람들이 자주 인용하는 말인 듯하다. 

Former New York Governor, Mario Cuomo, is credited with the phrase ‘campaign in poetry, govern in prose,’ which translates into painting a rosy picture of what one would do when voted into office as if by merely saying it, means it will happen without raising a finger.

이와 비슷하게 결혼을 poetry와 prose에 빗댄 인용문도 있다. 

Marriage - a book of which the first chapter is written in poetry and the remaining chapters in prose.

유튜브 라이브 아카데미 채널에서 알게된 표현. 

as if things weren't bad enough, ~      안그래도 안 좋은데, ~

As if things weren't bad enough with this Corona thing, we're faced with very disturbing news about a very problematic young man whose crime steps on some very sensitive issues that run really deep with people. 

그런데 찾아보니,

1. as를 빼고 if things weren't bad enough나 if that weren't bad enough 표현으로도 쓰인다.

2. bad를 빼고 if that weren't enough로도 쓰인다.  그런데 이렇게 쓰면 꼭 안 좋은 뜻으로만 쓰이진 않는다. 

발표자가 두명이다. 청중이 질문을 한다. 발표자 1이 대답을 그냥저냥 한다. 그러자 발표자 2가 저렇게 얘기한다. 

I will come at it. 그 질문에 제가 한번 답해 보죠.  I'll have a go at it.과 비슷한 뜻이 되겠다.
