Modern Family Season 2 Episode 1. 

Phil이 자신의 중고차를 팔기 전에 Claire와 아이들과 차를 타고 산에 올라 가서 옛 생각에 잠겨 있다가, 차에 문제가 있어서 아이들에게 빨리 나오라고 얘기하면서 이렇게 얘기한다.

"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast."

찾아보니 군대에서 처음으로 나온 말이네. 그리고 원래 표현은,

"Slow is steady, steady is smooth, smooth is fast."

They also use this saying in the Army, although this is the compressed form. The full saying we used was "Slow is steady, steady is smooth, smooth is fast."

For more context (from the Army perspective), this comes up most heavily in weapon drills and squad movement, particularly where combined: clearing houses; getting out of trucks while under fire; getting out of helicopters while under fire; carrying casualties. The idea is that we need to be able to do several complex tasks at once:

• Move with the group in a coordinated fashion, often across difficult terrain
• Keep weapons ready, which includes both presenting a threat to the direction you are responsible for and being mindful of safety
• Recognize and communicate relevant information (like threats or likely locations for threats)
• Any other assigned task (like carrying casualties or equipment)
• All of this needs to keep happening under conditions of sensory bombardment and high stress

The Army particularly stresses getting the first and second down to "muscle memory", which I put in quotes because they use the phrase for anything that needs to be automatic, even non-physical tasks.

미드 Modern Family(Season 2 Episode 4)에서 Claire가 Cameron에게 bike shorts가 어울리지 않는다고 얘기하면서 이렇게 얘기한다.

"I owe it to you to be honest."  솔직하게 얘기해야 할 것 같아요. 

Malcolm Gladwell의 podcast Season 4에서 알게 된 표현이다. Malcolm이 assistant와 LSAT 시험을 같이 보고나서, 성적이 똑같이 나오자 이렇게 말한다. 시험 보기 전에는 자기는 cognitive ability가 나이가 들면서 떨어졌을 테지만 인생 경험이 늘어났을 테고, assistant는 cognitive ability는 나이가 자기보다 어리니 더 좋을 테지만 인생경험이 적을 텐데, 이런 두 상쇄 효과가 LSAT 시험에서 어떻게 반영될지 궁금했었는게, 결과는 이쪽도 저쪽도 우세하지 않았다는 얘기다. 

구글에서 검색해 보면 아래와 같은 정의가 나온다. 

Definition of it's a wash. —used to say that something is equal and that one side does not have an advantage. You won the first game and I won the second, so it's a wash.

그런데 postage를 배송비라고 번역해도 괜찮을까?  우편비용이라고 하면 더 이상하게 들리는데...

어떤 일에도 실패하지 않는 삶은 없습니다. 너무 조심스럽게 살아서, 삶을 살았다고도 할 수 없는 경우를 빼고는 말이죠. 그런데 그런 삶은 그 자체로 실패한 삶입니다.

조금 오래되긴 했지만, 해리포터 지은이인 J.K.Rowling이 하버드 대학교 졸업식 연설에서 말한 내용이다. might as well have pp를 정확히 이해하기 쉽지 않다. 먼저 기본적으로 as well have pp 다음에 비교 대상이 되는 as ~가 생략된 구문이다.

1. 내부적 완료

might as well not have lived

1.1. have를 live와 붙여서 해석한다.

1.2. 따라서 might는 가능성의 뜻이 살아 있고, ‘살지 않았을 가능성이 다른 가능성만큼 있다’는 뜻이다.

1.3. 그런데 실제로는 이 뜻이 조금 변형되어 ‘살지 않았던 것이나 마찬가지이다.’란 뜻이 된다.

2. 외부적 완료

might as well not have lived

2.1. have를 might와 붙여서 해석한다.

2.2. ‘실제로는 살았지만 어떤 다른 조건이었다면 살지 않았으면 더 좋았을 것이다’란 뜻이다.

따라서 문맥상 내부적 완료로 보아서 해석해야 더 맞는다고 생각한다.

예문) I might as well have said that.

내부적 완료: 내가 그렇게 말했던 것이나 마찬가지다.

외부적 완료: 내가 그렇게 말했어야 했는데 말하지 못했다.

To think he lives near the beach but can't swim. 

‘그가 해변 가까이 사는데도 수영을 못한다니 믿기지 않네!

To think (that).....이 독립된 문장으로 이렇게 쓰인다는 사실! 놀라움을 표시하거나 믿을 수 없다는 느낌을 표현할 때 쓴다. 그래서 문장 끝에 마침표가 아닌 느낌표로 끝내는 사례도 많이 보인다.

이 표현을 몇년 전에 처음 봤던 <Pelvic Power by Eric Franklin> 27쪽에 나온 글귀는 아래와 같다.

If the coccyx is stuck, then the spine is limited in its movement. And to think that the spine is a byword for flexibility!

꼬리뼈가 굳으면 척추 움직임이 좁아진다. 그런데 척추를 유연성의 대명사라고 하니 참 재미있지 않은가!

첫 글로 올리기에 괜찮은 표현이다. 

그러니까, 한마디로 하면

"신의 손에 이끌려..."

그렇지만 꼭 종교적 문맥에서만 써야하는 표현은 아니다. 아래 글은 <워싱턴 포스트> 기사에서 뽑은 문장인데, 기독교 배경과 상관없는 글이다.

그러나 마사 스튜어트(Martha Stewart)는 이렇게 덧붙였다. "어떤 사람들은 저한테 홀딱 반했다는 사실을 어쩔 수 없이 숨겨야만 한다고 생각할 수 있어요. 왜냐하면 다른 사람들이 저를 이기적이고, 잘난체하고, 그냥 짜증 그 자체인 사람이라고 생각하니까요."  

어찌하다 보니, 티스토리를 알게 되었고, 블로그에 글을 써 볼까 해서 이렇게 첫 글까지 쓰게 된 과정이 마치,
