speak to 다음에 사람이 아닌 다른 것이 올 때는 우리 말과 어법이 다르기 때문에 잘 와 닿지 않는다.  그래서 여러 보기글을 보면서 익혀야 한다. 

~을 설명한다는 뜻으로 쓰인다. 영작하면 explain 밖에 생각 안 날 때 쓸 수 있다. 

1. There is a hypothesis that capitalism is based on a masculine model. Could you speak to that? 

2 These are not mere differences of opinion. As in the blitz, there are differences in behaviour, which seem to speak, ultimately, to differences in character.

3. I'm more addressing the issue and then the issue will speak to the audience. 

4. I want to make images that speak to that relationship. 

5. That was the issue I was trying to speak to. 

Decidedly elite participants라는 문구를 보면서 decidedly 뜻이 뭔지 헷갈림. 

Decidedly는 clearly, obviously와 거의 같은 뜻으로 쓸 수 있겠다. clearly나 obviously는 너무 식상하니까 decidedly를 기회되면 한 번 써봐야 겠다. 

I'm most decidedly not an expert in that field. 

The U.S. decided to take a decidedly different course from any time in the last 66 years.  

His subsequent painting looked decidedly old-fashioned. 

Youtube comedy channel인 'Between ferns'에서 off-putting으로 말장난을 한다.

A: It was off-putting. 

B: You should be off-pudding. You shouldn't eat pudding. 

Host인 A가 불쾌하다(off-putting)고 얘기하니까 guests인 B가 off-pudding이라고 얘기한다 하지만 A는 off-putting으로 알아들으니 B가 off-pudding이라고 말하고자 You shouldn't eat pudding이라고 한다.

Off-putting은 뭔가 좀 마음에 들지 않거나 적절하지 않은 물건, 사람, 상황 등을 말할 때 쓸 수 있다 

We need to be careful that the scale is communicated in a way which is off-putting to people. 

Some women found the competitive style of the discussions off-putting.

유튜브 라이브 아카데미 채널을 보다가 알게 된 표현.  

The worst is (likely) behind us.  가장 나쁜 상황은 벗어난 듯하다.

1. likely는 잘 안 넣는 듯하다. 그냥 I think the worst is behind us. 이런 짜임으로 자주 쓰는 듯하다.  

2. behind us 말고 다른 명사를 넣을 수 있나? 그렇다.

The worst is behind you, him, them, Facebook. 다 넣어서 쓰인다. 

3. behind 다음에 다른 말은 어떻게 넣나? 

The worst is behind us for housing. For commercial real estate, there is still a big dark cloud.

4. 반대 뜻은 많이 쓰이나?

Coca에서 검색하면 I fear the worst is ahead. 라는 보기글 하나만 나온다.   

Something being what it is, ...  "Something이 원래 그렇듯이"로 번역하면 되겠다. 

Politics being what it is, I know that some people try to score political points off our decision.

Human nature being what it is, people must be made to pay for something to appreciate it.

The market being what it is, the price variance is huge. 

With my personality being what it is, I had to learn everything and anything that I could.

give scope도 이력서에서 쓸만한 표현이다. allow or facilitate activity.

Those experiences gave me a wider scope to develop my skills.  

It would give greater scope for the courts to assess the validity of legislation against human rights benchmarks. 

이력서에서 쓰기 좋은 표현. 

Those experiences stood me in good stead.  그런 경험이 저에게 크게 도움이 되었습니다. 

도움이 되었다라고 하면, helpful, useful, beneficial 이런 형용사 밖에 생각이 안 난다. 동사는 stand, put, serve, hold 등 다양하게 쓸 수 있다. 

My enthusiasm for this job would stand me in good stead. 

The skills I picked up here always held me in good stead. 

The knowledge that we've accumulated from his incredible adventure is something that is going to serve us in good stead as we continue to accelerate and advance our forays into space. (Obama 대통령이 astronaut에게 한 말) 

I hope to do something I think is important and that will put me in good stead. 

이 표현도 유용하게 쓸 수 있겠다. 여러 상황에 적용이 가능하니까. 영작을 할 때 잘 쓰기 어려운 표현이다.

Behaviourism fell out of favour.  행동주의에 대한 관심이 식었다.

Kim Jong Nam quickly fell out of favour with his father. 김정남은 갑자기 아버지의 총애를 잃었다. 

Hebrew certainly fell out of favour as a household language.  집에서 히브리어를 쓰지는 않게 되었습니다. 

 Airline stocks fell out of favour with investors because of the global economic slowdown. 국제 경제 침체 때문에 투자자들이 항공사 주식을 외면했습니다.
