'걷잡다'는 거두어 잡든다는 뜻이다.

'겉잡다'는 겉으로 대강 짐작하여 헤아리는 걸 말한다.

아무리 겉잡아도 일주일은 넘게 길릴 일을 하루 이틀 만에 해치우려다가 결국 걷잡을 수 없는 사태를 초래하고 말았다. 

'겉잡아도'는 'roughly speaking'이라고 할 수 있고, '걷잡을 수 없는'은 uncontrollable이다.

if for no other reason than 뜻은 다른 이유가 없더라도 than 다음에 이어지는 이유만으로도 앞에 사실을 설명할 수 있다는 뜻이다.  

if for no other reason than simply means that what you're talking about is alone or already a good enough reason to do something.

Jay가 아내인 Gloria에게 우스개로 하는 말이다.

"Hey, pretty soon, you're gonna be north of 40. And I'm gonna trade you in for a newer model."

North of를 사전에서 찾아보니,

used to say that an amount is more than the stated amount

그러니까 번역하면

"왜 이러셔, 좀 있으면 당신도 40대야. 그러면 난 당신말고 더 젊은 여자를 들일거야."

Modern Family S02E17

Mitchell이 partner인 Cam에게 비꼬듯이 하는 말이다.

I'm adopting a tolerant attitude toward your flights of lunacy. 

여기서 flight 뜻은 a brilliant, imaginative or unrestrained exercise of display다. 그러니까 'flights of lunacy'라고 하면 '말도 안되는 괴상한 생각'이란 뜻쯤 되겠다. 비슷한 보기를 찾아보니 아래와 같이 쓰인다.

She could be disciplined. She could have wild flights of fantasy. She was really quite diverse. 

Throughout its history, Cuba has inspired larger-than-life flights of imagination.

But on occasion, he departs from the mundane into great flights of contemplation.

그런데 flights of fantasy나 flights of imagination은 '환상의 나래', '상상의 나래'쯤으로 번역하면 될까? 그리고 '환상의 나래'나 '상상의 나래'는 원래 우리말에 없었는데, 이 영어 표현을 번역하면서 처음 썼을까?

Modern Family Season 2 Episode 6

남미 콜롬비아 출신인 Gloria의 잘못된 발음이 줄거리의 한 축이다. 마지막에 가족들이 돌아가면서 Gloria를 놀리는 장면인데, 자막을 봐서는 어디가 웃긴 내용인지 알 수 없어서 찾아 보았다. 이런 내용을 번역으로 제대로 전달할 수 없지! 

그리고 앞 부분에서도 Gloria 발음 때문에 벌어지는 해프닝이 나온다. Gloria가 baby cheeses를 비서에게 사달라고 주문했는데 십자가에 달린 baby Jesus 장식품이 배달되어 왔다! 

Proverbial에는 두 가지 뜻이 있다.

1. typical, traditional, usual

proverbial wife/husband라고 하면 아주 전통적이고 전형적인 아내와 남편을 말한다.

2. well-known, legendary, reputed

속담이나 잘 알려진 문구 앞에 잘 쓰인다. 그리고 proverbial을  찾아보다가 마주치겐 된 관형 표현인 'a fly on the wall'

A fly on the wall 정의를 보면, 

If you say that you would like to be a fly on the wall on an occasion, you mean that you would like to hear what will be said or see what will happen while not being noticed. 

그러니까 몰래 숨어서 보거나 듣는 사람을 말한다. 이를테면, I'd love to be a (proverbial) fly on the wall when those two get home 라고 쓸 수 있다.  

Modern Family Season 2 Episode 1. 

Phil이 자신의 중고차를 팔기 전에 Claire와 아이들과 차를 타고 산에 올라 가서 옛 생각에 잠겨 있다가, 차에 문제가 있어서 아이들에게 빨리 나오라고 얘기하면서 이렇게 얘기한다.

"Slow is smooth, smooth is fast."

찾아보니 군대에서 처음으로 나온 말이네. 그리고 원래 표현은,

"Slow is steady, steady is smooth, smooth is fast."

They also use this saying in the Army, although this is the compressed form. The full saying we used was "Slow is steady, steady is smooth, smooth is fast."

For more context (from the Army perspective), this comes up most heavily in weapon drills and squad movement, particularly where combined: clearing houses; getting out of trucks while under fire; getting out of helicopters while under fire; carrying casualties. The idea is that we need to be able to do several complex tasks at once:

• Move with the group in a coordinated fashion, often across difficult terrain
• Keep weapons ready, which includes both presenting a threat to the direction you are responsible for and being mindful of safety
• Recognize and communicate relevant information (like threats or likely locations for threats)
• Any other assigned task (like carrying casualties or equipment)
• All of this needs to keep happening under conditions of sensory bombardment and high stress

The Army particularly stresses getting the first and second down to "muscle memory", which I put in quotes because they use the phrase for anything that needs to be automatic, even non-physical tasks.
